The Thompson Primary , Ballyclare

Victorian school day.

25th Apr 2022

In Primary 7, we have been learning about the reality of school life during Victorian times. We transformed our classroom and, in full costume, cautiously stepped back to the Victorian era.

The children experienced life as Victorian pupils within a strict school regime, requiring them to sit to attention in rows with segregated boys and girls. The girls completed tasks, such as cross stitch and the boys calculated using shillings and pence.

Following much chanting of times tables and recitals of script, we tried our hands at writing on slate and using a quill pen dipped in ink from an ink well. Tricky and messy business!

The children were keen to experience the use of finger stocks and the Dunce cap, much to the amusement of their peers.

At playtime, traditional Victorian games, such as skipping, hopscotch and racing hoops were enjoyed by all.

Needless to say, the children thoroughly enjoyed their experience and created some lasting memories.
